This morning, we had the pleasure of hearing from Penny Shimmin, Chief Executive of Sussex Community Development Association (SCDA), at our Chamber event.
Penny described SCDA as “East Sussex’s Best Kept Secret”—and it’s easy to see why. Despite their incredible work, many people aren’t fully aware of the vital role they play in our community.
Since their founding in 1997, SCDA has been a lifeline for the Lewes District and beyond. Driven by the needs of the community, their mission is to build stronger, healthier communities while tackling challenges like loneliness, social isolation, and food security.
In the past year, 81,747 people accessed their services and activities, supported by 317 volunteers and 74 member groups.
While SCDA operates from their base at the Denton Island Community Centre in Newhaven, they also have offices across the area, ensuring their reach spans much of East Sussex.
However, the demand for their services is growing faster than their current funding can meet. This highlights the ongoing need for support from the community and local businesses.
We’re looking forward to learning even more when Penny shares her presentation full of valuable statistics. In the meantime, you can explore their work further at https://sussexcommunity.org.uk/
Let’s help spread the word about SCDA—because the more people know, the stronger our community can become!
